A Practical Guide
Earning your Project Management Professional (PMP)® or Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® designation is one of the most effective ways to strengthen your career, increase your credibility, and add measurable value to your organization. The cost of exam prep training and exam fees might feel like a barrier, unless your employer is willing to sponsor the investment.
The good news? Many organizations are willing to support employee development when the request is framed strategically. This guide will help you prepare to ask for funding support with confidence.
How to Prepare for the Conversation
Asking your employer to fund your PMP or CAPM journey is easier when you treat it like a mini-project: prepare, articulate the value, and show alignment with organizational goals.
Clarify Your “Why”. Your goal is to position the investment as a business decision, not a personal one. Before you approach your boss, identify:
- What the designation will help you do better in your current role
- How it will support upcoming projects, strategic initiatives, or organizational priorities
- The benefits that extend beyond you, such as team efficiency, consistency, risk reduction, or improved communication.
Gather the Details Ahead of Time. Your boss’s time is limited. They’ll appreciate preparation and clear expectations. Go into the conversation ready with:
- The course cost
- The exam fee
- Timeline to complete training and schedule the exam
- Schedule for study time and virtual coaching (Are they within work hours?)
- A plan to balance work responsibilities while preparing
We’ve summarized these pieces of information in the email template below.
Connect the Training to Business Outcomes & the Return on Investment. Use language that reflects your company’s values. For instance, frame the certification as a tool to improve:
- Project delivery consistency
- Budget and schedule oversight
- Success rates on RFPs
- Cross-department communication
- Client experience and stakeholder engagement
- Ability to take on more responsibility
- Future leadership or mentorship within the organization
If your team is under-resourced or growing rapidly, emphasize how a project management designation equips you to build stronger internal capacity and operate more effectively.
Know Your Alternatives. Think proactively about solutions if full sponsorship is not possible. Consider:
- Partial funding
- Using professional development budget
- Reimbursement upon successful exam completion
- A commitment to stay with the company for a specified period
- Splitting cost between fiscal years
FAQs Employers Might Ask
What are the exam fees?
Exam fees are payable to the Project Management Institute (PMI) when scheduling your exam. The price varies based on where you are located globally and which designation you’re pursuing. As of Dec 2025, the prices are as follows:
- PMP: $655 USD (without a PMI membership)
- PMP: $405 USD (or $425 USD if located in United States) with a PMI membership ($169 USD)
- CAPM: $300 USD
Depending on where you’re located, purchasing your PMI membership when booking your exam may save you money.
How much does this cost the organization?
I’ve prepared a breakdown of all costs. The course fee is $2999 CAD and the PMI Exam fee is [enter based on your location & goal designation USD]. This is a one-time investment, and the designation remains valid as long as I meet continuing education requirements, which I can integrate into my existing professional development plan.
The tuition fee is due upon registration. I don’t pay the exam fee until about Week 6, when I schedule my exam.
Will this professional development require time away from work?
The course is structured so I can complete it without impacting my core responsibilities. Each week, the commitment is:
- 2-3 hours of study working through short lesson videos, practice quizzes, and content review—on my own schedule
- 1.5 hours attending a live virtual coaching session. There are multiple sessions to give me the flexibility to work around core meetings.
In the final week, I’ll use time to study and write my exam (3-5 hours), which can be scheduled for a weekday or weekend and written in person (recommended) or online.
Past learners report that the course works well for busy professionals who are already balancing busy work and personal/family lives.
Do our clients (or competitors) value Project Management designations like CAPM or PMP?
Yes, PMP and CAPM are among the most widely recognized project management credentials across North America and globally. The Project Management Institute (PMI) reports that there are more than 1.6 million PMP holders worldwide. PMP certification is frequently cited by organizations as a standard for project management competence across industries.
